Privacy Policy
Last updated May 31, 2026
Your financial data is yours. We use it only to run Magpie: to read your statements, sort your transactions, surface tips, and answer your questions. We do not sell it, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not use it to train AI models. This policy explains, in plain terms, what we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have over it.
1. Who we are
Magpie is a personal-finance app that reads your bank statements, sorts every transaction, and uses AI to surface money-saving tips and answer questions about your own accounts.
This policy covers the Magpie website, web app, and any mobile apps we publish. Where this policy says we, us, or Magpie, it means the team behind Magpie. If you have a question about it, write to us at hello@askmagpie.app.
2. What we collect
We collect three kinds of data, and only what we need to run the service.
Account details. When you sign up, we collect your name, email address, and the information needed to manage your subscription. Payment card details are handled by our payment processor; we do not store full card numbers ourselves.
Financial data you provide or connect. This is the data Magpie reads to do its work: your transactions, balances, and the statements you upload (PDF, CSV, OFX, or QIF), or the read-only feed you connect from your bank. You choose which accounts and which periods Magpie ever sees. Any connection is read-only and can never move money.
Basic usage and device data. To keep the service working and secure, we collect a limited set of technical data such as your device and browser type, approximate region, and log records of how you use the app. We use this to fix problems, prevent abuse, and improve the product.
3. How we use your data
We use your data to run Magpie and for nothing unrelated to it. Specifically, we use it to:
- read and categorize your transactions;
- generate tips that flag money you may be losing, each tied to a specific amount and the transaction behind it;
- power Ask Magpie, so you can ask questions and get answers drawn from your own accounts;
- provide customer support when you contact us;
- manage your account and subscription; and
- keep the service secure, reliable, and free of abuse.
To use Magpie, you must consent to us processing your financial data for these purposes. The processing is what makes the service work. Without it, Magpie cannot read your statements or answer your questions. You can withdraw that consent at any time by closing your account, as described in Your rights and choices.
4. AI and your data
Magpie uses AI to read your transactions, generate tips, and answer your questions in Ask Magpie. Because this is the part of the product that touches your most sensitive data, we want to be exact about how it works.
Your data is private, and we do not use it to train AI models, not ours, and not any third party's. When Magpie sends your financial data to AI to produce a tip or answer a question, that data is processed only to generate your result. It is not retained to train, fine-tune, or improve any AI model.
By using Magpie's AI features, you consent to your financial data being processed by our AI for the sole purpose of providing the service to you. Tips and answers are generated from your own transactions, not from the open internet.
AI output is informational, not advice. The tips and answers Magpie produces are there to help you see your own money clearly. They are not financial, tax, accounting, or legal advice, and you should confirm anything important with a qualified professional before acting on it.
5. How we share data
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone who would use it for their own marketing. Your statements are not a product and not a dataset.
A limited number of service providers help us operate Magpie, for example infrastructure, storage, payment processing, and the AI processing described above. These providers may handle your data only on our instructions, under contract, and solely to run the service for you. They are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
We may disclose data only when we genuinely must, such as to respond to a valid, binding request from the authorities, enforce our terms, or protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service. If Magpie is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, we will tell you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
6. Security
Magpie's access to your accounts is read-only. It can view transactions to organize them, but there is no feature anywhere in the product that can send, transfer, or withdraw money.
Your statements and transactions are encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited to what is needed to run the service and answer your own questions. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat your financial data as the most sensitive thing we hold and build accordingly. You can read more about how your data is handled on our security page.
7. Your rights and choices
Your data is yours, and you stay in control of it. At any time, you can:
- Access the data Magpie holds about you through your account;
- Export everything as CSV or JSON, so you keep a copy on your own terms;
- Delete your account and all of its data on request, and once it is gone, it is gone for good; and
- Withdraw consent to our processing of your financial data by closing your account.
To exercise any of these, write to hello@askmagpie.app and we will help.
8. Data retention
We keep your data while your account is active, so Magpie can do its work across the months and years of statements you give it. When you ask us to delete your data, or after you close your account, we delete it, subject only to limited records we need for legitimate business purposes, such as billing history, and only for as long as necessary.
9. Cookies and analytics
We use a minimal set of cookies and similar technologies, limited to the ones needed to keep you signed in and to make the site and app work. We do not use advertising cookies or sell data gathered through them.
We use a minimal amount of analytics to understand how the site and app are used in aggregate so we can improve them. We never use analytics to build advertising profiles or to track you across the web. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
10. Children
Magpie is a financial product for adults. It is not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect data from, anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us their data, write to hello@askmagpie.app and we will delete it.
11. Where your data is handled
We and our service providers may process and store your data in more than one place. Wherever your data is handled, the commitments in this policy travel with it: it is encrypted, it is never sold, and it is never used to train AI.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Magpie changes. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change is material, we will give you notice (by email or in the app) before it takes effect, so you have a chance to review it.
13. Contact
If you have any question about this policy or about how Magpie handles your data, write to us at hello@askmagpie.app.
